Παρουσίαση μέσω ZOOM: “2026 Belgium Mid-Term Tour”

The International Molinological Society Αρ.

The proposed route will take participants through Flanders, covering both West Flanders and East Flanders (33 locations), as well as the Campine region in the provinces of Antwerp and Flemish Brabant (13 locations). The tour will also extend southward into the historic territories of the former County of Flanders – partly in Hainaut (Belgium) and partly in French Flanders (France), adding another seven sites. Remarkably, in some of these areas, elderly residents still speak the old Flemish language.
In total, 53 locations are planned: 49 mills and 4 photoshoots. The list includes 31 windmills, 13 watermills, 2 horse mills, 1 farm mill, and even a treadwheel once used by a dog. Participants will also encounter a statue of a miller and four museum collections.
Among the windmills, visitors will discover a fascinating variety — from postmills with open trestles or roundhouses, to stone mills on mounds or ground-sailed types, some featuring reefing stages. Highlights include postmills with traditional Flemish three-piece wooden stocks, examples with Van Bussel-type stocks, and even a postmill with multiple panniers (combuse). One of the featured mills is a war survivor, while another boasts a famous collar cap.
The watermills are equally diverse, including those with and without filling ponds. Some produce electricity (one dating back to World War I), while others still grind corn or press oil using edge runner stones. Visitors will see authentic gear wheel pits, paired stones, and even shade trees (tilia) planted to protect the waterwheels. One of the highlights will be a working tide mill near the River Scheldt, and the tour will conclude at a fully restored paper-making watermill.
Adding to the variety, the programme includes a farm jenever distillery, several operational horse mills, and small local museums that illustrate the region’s rich milling history. Participants might even have the chance to sample the unique “windmill beaker.”
Finally, the tour will celebrate the miller’s craft, now officially recognised in Flanders as part of the region’s intangible cultural heritage.

Attica’s rapid development has created the misconception that few water and wind-powered installations existed in the region.
Olga’s doctoral research aimed to identify, document, and map these structures, enriching the understanding of Attica’s technological history and cultural heritage.
Using historical maps, texts, images, and oral testimonies, the study analysed their distribution, uses, and significance.
Fieldwork and documentation also recorded related place names and landmarks, concluding with proposals for preserving and promoting Attica’s pre-industrial technology.
Olga Lekou, is an architect with a Master’s in monument restoration and a PhD from the School of Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens.
Her research, including her undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral theses, has focused on the restoration and documentation of mills.
Since 1996 she has been studying Greek mills and has done much fieldwork and research on them. She has been a member of TIMS since 1997.

TIMS Online Presentation on September 10th, 2022 – “Doce Inferno do Engenho” (Sweet Inferno of the Sugar Mill)

Dear TIMS Members,
on the next TIMS Online Conference a presentation will be given by M. Dores Cruz. The title of the presentation is:
“Doce Inferno do Engenho”: Praia Melão and São Tomé’s Sugar Mills in the construction of colonial landscapes and the making of the modern Atlantic World (16th-17th century).
Abstract:
One of the most enduring legacies of European colonialism is the plantation system, with long lasting consequences on the contemporary world. Despite their pioneering role in the development of the plantation system, sugar in the 16th and cocoa in the 19th and 20th centuries, the material history of the islands of São Tomé and Principe is poorly known. This lecture focuses specifically on the site of Praia Melão, the largest sugar mill (engenho) and estate in the island, active from the 16th to the 19th century. I will discuss the mill’s infrastructures, and how they enabled sugar production and the control of enslaved population. Praia Melão is a singular sugar plantation site, which includes evidence of a large hydraulic mill, and it is currently at great risk of destruction. The sugar mill of Praia Melão will be discussed in the context of São Tomé’s sugar cycle, highlighting the materiality and the role of plantation infrastructures in the construction of power relations, as well as the role of the island in the making of the modern Atlantic world.
